Why We’re Going
Thousands of vermilion torii gates winding up Mt. Inari. The most visually iconic site of the trip. Early morning is essential — this transforms completely once crowds arrive.
📷 Photography Prep
See full zone: Photo Journey Guide → Fushimi Inari (Torii Gates)
Best Lens: 23mm f/1.4 Backup Lens: 16mm f/2.8 Best Time: Before 7:00 AM — non-negotiable for clean shots Light: Soft early morning light filtered through the gates Focus On: Leading lines through gates, people entering/exiting frames, compression of gate layers, forest atmosphere Restrictions: Respectful photography throughout; don’t block pathways
Tips & Notes
- No need to summit the full mountain (2–3 hr round trip) — lower gates are the photography reward
- Leave when crowds spike — that’s the right call, not a failure
- Pairs well with Sanjūsangen-dō afterward (quiet indoor complement)
- Full hike to summit: ~2–3 hours if energy allows
