🏮 Pontocho

Type: Restaurant Alley / Evening Atmosphere City: Kyoto (day trip from Osaka) Neighborhood: Nakagyo Ward (between Sanjo and Shijo, west of Kamo River) Address (EN): Pontocho, Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto (alley between Sanjo and Shijo, 1 block west of Kamo River) Address (JP): 京都府京都市中京区先斗町 Website: https://www.japan.travel/en/spot/79/ Hours: Alley 24 hours; restaurants typically 17:00–23:00 Entry: Free (individual restaurants charge separately) Photography: ✅ Street/alley; ask before photographing inside restaurants

Why We’re Going

A narrow stone-paved alley too thin for cars, lined with traditional restaurants and bars. Summer adds open-air dining platforms over the Kamo River. Pure Kyoto evening atmosphere.

📷 Photography Prep

Best Lens: 23mm f/1.4 Backup Lens: 27mm f/2.8 Best Time: Early evening — before full dark, when interior light glows through paper screens Light: Warm lantern glow, atmospheric and low-contrast Focus On: The alley perspective (narrow, receding), lanterns, lit restaurant facades, evening pedestrians Restrictions: Ask before photographing restaurant interiors

Tips & Notes

  • The plover (chidori) bird symbol appears on lanterns throughout — look for it
  • Summer kawayuka (river dining platforms, May–September) is a seasonal highlight
  • Dinner here before returning to Osaka makes an ideal Kyoto day ending
  • Pairs naturally with a Gion walk
