Why We’re Going

One of Kyoto’s most important shrines. The vermilion west gate faces directly down Shijo-dori — an iconic Kyoto image. Adjoins Maruyama Park to the east.

📷 Photography Prep

Best Lens: 23mm f/1.4 Backup Lens: 16mm f/2.8 (for the gate framing the street) Best Time: Early morning or early evening Light: West gate catches golden hour light in the afternoon; morning is soft and calm Focus On: Vermilion west gate from Shijo-dori, lanterns, shrine architecture Restrictions: Respectful photography throughout; be aware of worshippers

Tips & Notes

  • Gateway to the Gion and Higashiyama walking corridor
  • Maruyama Park directly east — weeping cherry tree is famous in spring
  • Pairs naturally with a Gion evening walk
  • Hosts the Gion Matsuri festival each July (not during this trip)
