Yesterday was the arrival and orientation day. Today is the first flexible Tokyo day with full energy. The group is calibrated to the city now. Good day for Asakusa early (Senso-ji before the crowds, then Nakamise and Kappabashi), or Shinjuku Gyoen if cherry blossom reports confirm yaezakura is active. Also the first natural day for the group to split by interest and reconvene.

Energy expectation: Moderate to high. First full Tokyo day with no travel logistics.

Photo Prep

Pack (Asakusa/Senso-ji): 23mm mounted · 16mm in bag C-slot: C4 Shadowchrome for the Kaminarimon red lantern → C1 Herzawg’s Portra for Nakamise street scenes and interior shrine Note: The Kaminarimon lantern is iconic and worth the early arrival — before 8 AM the gate is shootable without people walking through frame. C4’s B&W treatment handles the red-to-gray protanopia issue on the lantern. Switch to C1 for everything else.

Pack (Shinjuku Gyoen): 23mm mounted · 70-300mm in bag C-slot: C5 Cherry Blossoms all day Note: 70-300mm for compressed blossom clusters against the skyline from inside the garden — there’s a greenhouse building and mid-park bench area that frames well at 200mm+.

Pack (Ginza split): 23mm mounted · 27mm in bag C-slot: C2 Bright Retro for the wide boulevard and architecture → C1 backup for interiors

Cherry Blossom Check — Do This First

Before committing to a plan: Check Cherry Blossoms - April and the Sakura Checker app.

Mid-April in Tokyo is yaezakura season — the late-blooming double-petaled varieties. If Shinjuku Gyoen reports active bloom, that takes priority over Asakusa today. You can do Senso-ji any day; peak bloom has a 5-day window.

Path A — Asakusa Morning + Optional Ginza Afternoon Split

Best when cherry blossoms are not the priority or bloom has already peaked.

Morning: Asakusa (7:30 AM)

Getting there from Ikebukuro: Marunouchi Line from Ikebukuro → Otemachi (20 min) → transfer to Ginza Line → Asakusa (5 min). Or Hibiya Line from various points. Total: ~30 min, ~¥280.

Arrive before 8:00 AM for the best Kaminarimon conditions.

Senso-ji Temple: The Kaminarimon gate, then the Nakamise shopping street leading to the main hall. The outer grounds are free; always open. Morning incense, fortune papers, the main hall approach — this is the classic Asakusa sequence. Budget 60–90 min if shooting.

Kappabashi: “Kitchen Town” — a full street of professional cookware shops, food models, knife shops, and restaurant supply. 10-minute walk from Senso-ji. Good for Jeff (kitchen and craft interest). Ana: the plastic food models and knife shops are worth seeing. 30–45 min browse.

Group split here (optional):

  • Jeff + Matt → Tokyo watch circuit afternoon (Ginza 5-6 shops, concentrated)
  • Jeannette → Ginza afternoon, specifically Itoya Ginza (stationery flagship, 9 floors)
  • Ana → Ueno area (Ameyoko market, vintage shops) or rejoin at Ginza

Meeting point if splitting: Exit B3 of Ginza Station, 13:00.

Afternoon: Ginza Watch + Stationery Circuit

Jeff and Matt: The Ginza watch circuit covers 5–6 pre-owned dealers within a 10-minute walk of each other. Ginza District page has the map and hours. Budget 2–3 hours.

Jeannette: Itoya Ginza is 9 floors. Allow 90 min minimum. The basement stationery market and top-floor custom printing are the highlights.

Reconvene for dinner: Ginza or nearby Tsukiji Outer Market (5 min walk) for a seafood dinner.

Path B — Shinjuku Gyoen (Cherry Blossom Day)

If yaezakura bloom is confirmed active, this is the best Tokyo cherry blossom day. Don’t skip it for something less time-sensitive.

Getting there: Marunouchi Line from Ikebukuro → Shinjuku-Gyoenmae (15 min, ~¥170). Garden opens 9:00 AM. Entry ¥500.

Shinjuku Gyoen has three distinct garden areas — Japanese, French formal, and English landscape. The yaezakura are heaviest in the Japanese section. The greenhouse at the north end is photogenic.

Allow 2–3 hours. This is a relaxed walk, not a circuit. Bring a snack.

After the garden: Shinjuku proper is 10 min walk. Jeannette: Hands Shinjuku is 20 min north. Ana: Shinjuku character shops. Jeff/Matt: watch shops in the Takashimaya Times Square complex.

Path C — Neighborhood Base Day

If energy is lower than expected or the group wants a genuinely easy day.

Ikebukuro is self-contained:

  • Sunshine City — Ana: Animate flagship, Namja Town (indoor food theme park), J-World. Multi-hour anchor.
  • Seibu and Tobu department stores on both sides of the station — floors of housewares, food halls, books, fashion
  • Ramen Alley and the surrounding streets east of the station — a dense cluster of restaurants within 5 min on foot

No transit needed. Good for a recovery day before the rest of the week.
