⛩️ Mt. Kongo — Highest Peak in Osaka Prefecture

Why it’s worth it

  • Summit at 1,125 m — biggest elevation gain in the area
  • Chihaya Shrine and ruins of Chihaya Castle (14th century) on the route
  • Katakuri (dogtooth violet) wildflowers bloom in April on upper slopes
  • Views of Osaka, Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, and Awaji Island on clear days

🌸 Mt. Katsuragi — Rhododendron Ridge

Why it’s special in April

  • Late April often catches the start of approximately 1,000,000 shakunage (rhododendron) shrubs in bloom on the summit plateau
  • Peak bloom is early–mid May, but late April is worth attempting
  • Can combine with Mt. Kongo on the Diamond Trail for a full ridge day

Distance: ~6.3 km round trip (Tengudani Trail) Elevation Gain: ~614 m (summit 959 m) Difficulty: Hard — steep and sustained Time: 3.5–4.5 hours

Transit from Osaka: Osaka Metro → Abenobashi → Kintetsu Minami-Osaka Line → Kintetsu-Gose Station (~50 min, ~¥620) → bus or walk to Katsuragi Tozanguchi (~15 min) Total: ~75 min

Diamond Trail note: Katsuragi and Kongo sit at opposite ends of the same ridge. A partial traverse between the two summits is achievable as a long full-day route.
