Why We’re Going
The official Bandai Namco Gundam flagship - the largest and most complete Gundam retail destination in Japan. Exclusive Tokyo-only kits, limited colorways, and collector items that don’t exist anywhere else. For Ana this is the prime stop; the Unicorn Gundam statue is directly outside in the plaza.
What’s Here
- Model kits - High Grade (HG), Master Grade (MG), Real Grade (RG), Perfect Grade (PG); 2,000+ products across ~2,000 m² of floor space
- Tokyo exclusives - kits and items only sold at this location; if something says “Gundam Base Tokyo Limited” it cannot be bought online or elsewhere
- Gunpla builder’s workshop - paid sessions to build and paint kits on-site (advance reservation, ~¥1,000–2,000); worth booking ahead if Ana wants the experience
- Annex branch on 2F - opened December 2023; check both 7F main and 2F annex; some products split between floors
- Gundam Café - adjacent to the store; Zaku burgers, themed drinks; kitschy but genuinely fun
- Display cases - showroom of built master-grade and perfect-grade kits; good reference before buying
Odaiba Day Sequence
The Gundam Base and Unicorn Gundam Statue are best done as a full afternoon-into-evening:
| Time | Action | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| ~1:00 PM | Arrive Odaiba via Rinkai Line or Yurikamome | Tokyo Teleport Station → 3 min walk to DiverCity |
| 1:00–2:30 PM | Gundam Base Tokyo (7F) | Browse, buy kits; Tokyo exclusives are on a separate display wall |
| ~2:30 PM | Unicorn Gundam Statue (plaza outside) | Afternoon daylight view; 3:00 PM performance option |
| 3:00 PM | Optional: 15:00 transformation performance | Good daytime option if not staying for evening |
| 3:30–5:30 PM | Odaiba Seaside Park, Rainbow Bridge views | Walk the waterfront; sunset begins ~6:25 PM |
| ~5:00 PM | Position near statue for sunset approach | Gundam + blue sky → blue hour |
| 5:40–6:25 PM | Golden hour / blue hour at the waterfront | Best photography window - Rainbow Bridge, bay, statue |
| 6:30 PM | Dinner at DiverCity or Aqua City | Multiple options; Gundam Café if you haven’t yet |
| 6:30 PM | Return to statue plaza, hold position | 19:00 performance - arrive 30 min early for front position |
| 7:00 PM | 19:00 transformation performance | Illuminated unicorn/destroy mode; best light balance |
| 8:00–8:30 PM | Optional: stay for 20:30 performance | Darker, more neon-heavy; or begin return journey |
| ~9:00 PM | Return to Ikebukuro | Rinkai Line → Osaki → Saikyo Line → Ikebukuro (~45 min) |
Best performance to target: 19:00 - blue hour backdrop means the statue lighting reads against sky, not black. The 20:30 performance is more neon-dramatic but you lose the sky.
Getting There
From Ikebukuro: Ikebukuro → JR Saikyo Line → Osaki → Rinkai Line → Tokyo Teleport Station → 3 min walk to DiverCity ~40 min | ~¥560
Alternative (scenic): Shimbashi → Yurikamome monorail → Daiba or Aomi Station → 5 min walk ~50 min | ~¥410 | The Yurikamome ride over Rainbow Bridge is worth doing once
IC card covers both routes.
Tips
- Tokyo Limited kits are clearly labeled - buy these here; they won’t be available at Nakano or Akihabara
- Bring a bag or pack some buffer in luggage - kits are boxed and bulkier than expected
- The Gunpla workshop requires advance booking at the store website; walk-ins are sometimes available but not guaranteed in April
- Gundam Café is next to the store entrance on 7F; themed food is genuinely good (not just gimmick); the Zaku green curry is popular
