Kyoto is a day-trip from Osaka — see Kyoto Morning Strategy for how to sequence days and avoid peak crowds. Arrive before 8 AM at the top sites.
Higashiyama Cluster
Walk between these — close together on the east hillside.
-
Kiyomizu-dera - Temple / Views / Iconic. Wood-stage temple cantilevered over the hillside — no nails used in the original construction. Dawn is transformative (and empty). Stone-paved Sannen-zaka and Ninen-zaka lanes lead down from the gate. Allow 2 hours; approach path has good shopping and snack stops. 📷 C1 Herzawg’s Portra · 16mm+23mm
-
Kodaiji Temple - Zen Garden / Bamboo / Quiet. Founded 1606 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s widow. Two small bamboo groves and a tranquil pond garden. Less visited than the other Higashiyama stops — better for wandering without crowds. 1 hour. 📷 C1 Herzawg’s Portra · 23mm+16mm
-
Yasaka Shrine - Shinto Shrine / Park. Vermilion gates at the end of Shijo-dori; Maruyama Park directly behind. Free entry. Cherry blossoms in Maruyama Park peak in early April — worth an evening visit. 45 min. 📷 C4 Shadowchrome · 23mm
-
Gion District - Historic Streets / Atmosphere. Preserved machiya (wooden townhouse) streets, especially Hanamikoji. Maiko and geiko sightings still happen in the early morning and evening. Walk, don’t rush. Best before 9 AM or after 6 PM. 📷 C1 Herzawg’s Portra (dusk) / C3 Teal Nights (dark) · 23mm+27mm
Arashiyama Cluster
West side of Kyoto — half-day minimum, further from the city.
-
Arashiyama Bamboo Grove - Nature / Photography / Iconic. Short (~500m), dramatic bamboo corridor. Arrives at Tenryu-ji temple and garden (worth adding). Extremely crowded by 10 AM — go at opening or at dusk. The surrounding area (Togetsukyo bridge, river views, small shrines) is worth 2–3 hours. 📷 C6 Herzawg Negative · 16mm+23mm
-
Philosopher’s Path - Walking Route / Canal / Cherry Blossoms. Stone path along a canal between Ginkakuji (Silver Pavilion) and Nanzenji temple. One of the best cherry blossom routes in Kyoto in early April. 2 km, 40–50 min walking plus time at the temples. Mostly flat. 📷 C5 Cherry Blossoms · 23mm+70-300mm
-
Ginkaku-ji - Zen Temple / Garden / Sand Cone. The understated counterpoint to Kinkakuji — unpainted dark wood, a moss garden, and the kogetsudai sand cone (a precise geometric mound unique to this site). Starting point for the Philosopher’s Path cherry blossom walk. 8:30 AM opening. 45–60 min.
-
Nanzen-ji - Zen Temple / Aqueduct / Gate. Natural terminus of the Philosopher’s Path walk. Famous for the Suirokaku aqueduct — a brick Roman-arch structure (1890) running through the temple grounds — and the massive Sanmon gate (1628). Grounds free; gate ¥600. 30–45 min.
Standalone Temples and Shrines
-
Fushimi Inari Taisha - Shinto Shrine / Hike / Iconic. Thousands of orange torii gates winding up the mountain behind the main shrine. The lower section (30 min) is crowded; the upper mountain (2–3 hours full loop) thins out fast. Matt territory — real hike option. Free entry, open 24 hours. 📷 C4 Shadowchrome · 23mm+16mm
-
Kinkakuji - Temple / Gold / Iconic. Gold-leaf pavilion reflected in a mirror pond. Genuinely stunning despite being crowded. Worth 1 hour. Pair with Ryoan-ji (rock garden) nearby — both in the northwest quadrant of Kyoto. 📷 C2 Bright Retro · 23mm+16mm
-
Ryoan-ji - Zen Temple / Rock Garden / Contemplative. The most famous karesansui (dry rock garden) in Japan — 15 stones in white gravel, none fully visible from a single viewpoint. The aged clay perimeter wall is as photogenic as the stones. Arrive at 8:00 AM opening. 45–60 min. 20-minute walk from Kinkakuji.
-
Kenninji Temple - Zen Temple / Art. Kyoto’s oldest Zen temple (1202). Famous for the twin-dragon ceiling painting in the main hall and a dry rock garden. Compact, calm, and often overlooked. 45 min. 📷 C1 Herzawg’s Portra · 23mm+16mm
-
Sanjusangendo - Temple / History / Unusual. A 120-meter-long hall containing 1,001 gilded Buddha statues in perfect rows — a sight that doesn’t photograph well but is genuinely disorienting in person. Add to any Higashiyama day. 1 hour. 📷 C1 Herzawg’s Portra · 23mm (exterior only)
Food and Markets
-
Nishiki Market - Food Market / Snacks. Covered pedestrian market running east-west through central Kyoto. Pickled vegetables, tofu skin, grilled skewers, matcha sweets. Narrow aisles get crowded after 11 AM. 45 min–1 hour. 📷 C6 Herzawg Negative · 16mm+23mm
-
Pontocho - Restaurant Alley / Dinner. Narrow alley parallel to the Kamo River with restaurants stacked wall to wall — Japanese, French, Italian, kaiseki. Best as a dinner destination; some spots have riverside terraces (kawayuka) in warmer months. Reservations recommended for specific restaurants. 📷 C1 Herzawg’s Portra (dusk) / C3 Teal Nights (dark) · 23mm+27mm
Night Events
- Nijo Castle Sakura Festival - Night Illumination / UNESCO Castle / Sakura. 300 illuminated cherry trees and projection mapping on the Karamon Gate. Festival March 19 – April 19; night event 6–10 PM. Advance tickets recommended. Evening add-on — pairs with any central Kyoto day. 📷 C3 Teal Nights · 16mm+23mm
Immersive Art
- TeamLab Biovortex Kyoto - Digital Art / Permanent / Indoors. TeamLab’s Kyoto venue (opened Oct 2025) — 50+ installations across Athletics Forest and Future Park. 7 min walk from Kyoto Station (Hachijo Gate). Pairs with Sanjusangendo on Apr 10 Path C. 💴 ¥3,800 · advance booking recommended.
Day Hikes
- Day Hikes - Kyoto Area - Outdoor / Half Day or Full Day. Kurama and Kibune trail (mountain village to mountain village, 3–4 hours), Fushimi Inari full summit, Arashiyama extended loop. All accessible by train from central Kyoto. 📷 C1 Herzawg’s Portra · 23mm+16mm
