Apr 11 Plan — Bamboo First, Upper Walk Second
The Apr 11 sequence is designed to beat crowds at both sites. Arriving from Fushimi Inari by 8:10 AM puts you at the bamboo grove before the Saturday tour groups arrive. After Tenryu-ji, taxi up to Otagi Nenbutsuji and walk the upper Sagano path back down — the quiet village Kyoto that most visitors never see.
Tip from a friend who discovered this on their honeymoon 26 years ago and verified it still holds: the upper Sagano walk starting from Otagi is a completely different (better) experience than arriving at the bamboo grove from below.
The Route — Apr 11
Getting There (from Fushimi Inari)
After the 30-min Fushimi Inari lower loop (done by 7:30 AM):
- JR Nara Line → Kyoto Station (8 min, ¥150) → JR San-in/Sagano Line → Saga-Arashiyama Station (15 min, ¥240)
- Arrive Saga-Arashiyama ~8:10 AM; 10 min walk north to bamboo grove
Getting There (from Osaka, if not combining with Fushimi Inari)
- Walk to Shin-Imamiya Station (~10 min) → JR Osaka Loop Line → Osaka Station (~13 min, ¥180)
- JR Special Rapid (新快速) → Kyoto Station (~28 min, ¥580) · IC card, no reservation, runs from ~5:30 AM
- JR San-in/Sagano Line → Saga-Arashiyama (15 min, ¥240)
Step 1: Arashiyama Bamboo Grove (9:30–9:50 AM)
(open 24 hours ✅)
The famous 500m bamboo corridor — towering stalks up to 20 meters, extraordinary verticality and scale. At 9:30 AM on a Saturday crowds will be present — one efficient pass through is the move. The upper Sagano walk ahead has far fewer people.
- 💴 Free · 10 min walk from Saga-Arashiyama Station
- One pass through the corridor is enough — shoot it, experience it, move on
- 📷 16mm f/2.8 (verticality and corridor scale); C6 Herzawg Negative (filmic greens) or C4 Shadowchrome (stark B&W vertical lines); overcast light is ideal — direct sun creates harsh dapple; shoot INTO the corridor looking south; find a gap and wait 30 seconds
Step 2: Tenryu-ji Temple (9:55–10:40 AM)
(opens 8:30 AM ✅ — 5 min walk south of bamboo grove)
Tenryu-ji (天龍寺) — UNESCO World Heritage; one of the finest garden compositions in Japan. Large pond garden with raked gravel sections and borrowed mountain scenery behind. The garden was designed by Musō Soseki in 1339 and has barely changed since.
- 💴 ¥500 garden · ¥300 additional for main hall interior (optional)
- 📷 23mm f/1.4 · C1 Herzawg’s Portra — pond reflections, early morning light, mountain backdrop
Step 3: Sagano Village Walk (11:00–11:45 AM)
⚠️ Apr 11 note: Otagi Nenbutsuji and Adashino Nenbutsuji were both found closed on our visit. Do not rely on them being open — verify individually before planning around them. The village walk and Hiranoya tea house remain worthwhile without the temples.
The lane from upper Sagano down through the historic village:
- Grilled mochi and pickled vegetable vendors
- Bamboo craft shop — handmade bamboo goods
- Shigaraki pottery shop — rustic traditional ceramics
- Small galleries and craft studios
📷 27mm f/2.8 · C6 Herzawg Negative — faded filmic treatment for weathered wood shopfronts and handmade goods
Step 4: Hiranoya Sagano Tea House (11:45 AM–12:15 PM)
(opens 9:30 AM — verify before visiting)
Hiranoya Sagano — 400-year-old tea house; matcha and traditional Kyoto wagashi sweets in a garden setting.
- 💴 Matcha set ¥800–1,200 · ⚠️ cash only
- Ask before photographing inside; garden exterior is fine
Step 5: Lunch (12:15–1:00 PM)
Continue downhill from Adashino. The lane passes through historic Sagano village:
- Grilled mochi and pickled vegetable vendors
- Bamboo craft shop — handmade bamboo goods
- Shigaraki pottery shop — rustic traditional ceramics
- Small galleries and craft studios

Step 6: Arashiyama Village Browse + Return (1:00–1:30 PM)
- Togetsukyo Bridge views, Okutan tofu restaurant, small shops; slow pace
- Return transit: JR Sagano → Kyoto Station (15 min, ¥240) → JR Special Rapid (新快速) → Osaka Station (~28 min, ¥580) → JR Loop Line → Shin-Imamiya (~13 min, ¥180) → walk home (~10 min); arrive ~4:15 PM
