Essential for a carry-on-only trip with Shinkansen transitions and Kyoto day trips. You do not need to drag your full bags through temples.

How They Work

  • Locate lockers near station exits - look for コインロッカー signs or ask station staff
  • Choose a size that fits your bag (test the door before paying)
  • Pay by IC card (tap on the panel) or coins (¥100 coins)
  • Lock, take the key or receipt
  • To retrieve: return before the cutoff (usually 3 days max); tap IC card or use key

If a locker is full or you can’t find one: Station staff can point you to alternative banks. Major stations have multiple locker areas - if one is full, try a different exit.

Key Locations for This Trip

Kyoto Station

Best use: Kyoto day trips from Osaka Drop bags here on arrival by Shinkansen, explore Kyoto all day, retrieve on the way back.

  • Located near all major exits: Central, Karasuma, Hachijo
  • Large supply - rarely fully occupied before 10 AM or after 5 PM
  • Practical flow: Arrive Kyoto Station → find lockers (Central exit, basement level) → drop bags → take Kyoto bus or subway → return and retrieve bags before last train back to Osaka

Shin-Osaka

Use case: April 14 pre-boarding gap (11:50 AM–12:50 PM) Check out of Osaka House at 10 AM and carry bags to Shin-Osaka — use lockers on the Shinkansen concourse level to go hands-free during the 1-hour gap for lunch and omiyage shopping.

  • Lockers near the Shinkansen ticket gates and along the concourse
  • Large lockers fit a standard carry-on rolling bag: ¥600–700
  • Pay by IC card
  • Retrieve by 12:50 PM before heading to the platform (Green Car is toward the middle of the 16-car N700)

Nankai Namba

Near Osaka House transit hub Useful if you want to head into the city before returning to the house.

Osaka Station (Umeda)

Good option for the Osaka base - multiple large locker banks near all exits.

Tokyo Station

Use case: April 14 if Tokyo House check-in is delayed Arriving 15:33 — check-in is 4 PM so this is usually not needed. If access is delayed, drop bags here and head back at 3:45 PM. Lockers near the Shinkansen exit (central concourse) and Marunouchi exits.

April 14 - The Key Day

The situation: Check out of Osaka House at 10 AM. Nozomi 22 departs Shin-Osaka 13:06, arrives Tokyo Station 15:33. Tokyo House check-in at 4:00 PM — arriving at the house ~4:15 PM, which is right at check-in.

Coin locker use cases:

  1. Shin-Osaka (main use): Use lockers during the 11:50 AM–12:50 PM pre-boarding gap. Go hands-free for lunch and omiyage shopping on the concourse — retrieve by 12:50 PM and carry bags onto the train.
  2. Tokyo Station (if check-in is delayed): Arrive 15:33; if the host can’t accommodate early access, drop bags at Tokyo Station and explore nearby before heading to Ikebukuro at 3:45–4:00 PM. Lockers near the Shinkansen exit and Marunouchi exits.

Kyoto Day Trip Flow

The recommended coin locker strategy for Kyoto:

  1. Depart Osaka (full bags) if needed, or leave bags at Osaka House and travel light
  2. If you’ve already checked out of Osaka House and bags are with you: Kyoto Station lockers
  3. Store bags (medium/large), pay by IC card
  4. Spend the day in Kyoto without bags - temples, Philosopher’s Path, Nishiki Market
  5. Return to Kyoto Station, retrieve bags, take Nankai back to Osaka or continue to Tokyo

Most Kyoto day trips from the Osaka House will NOT require lockers - you leave bags at the house and return same day.

Tips

  • IC card is easiest - no hunting for ¥100 coins
  • Go early if it’s a holiday or busy weekend - popular stations fill up
  • Take a photo of the locker number - easy to forget which one in a large bank
  • 3-day maximum - if you need longer, retrieve and re-store (pay again); bags left too long get moved by station staff and require retrieval at a service counter
